STAY OFF, STAY AWAY, STAY ALIVE
Train and Track Safety for Pedestrians
- NEVER walk on or near railroad
tracks. TRACKS ARE FOR TRAINS.
- NEVER place
your toys on the track. It is possible that your toy
will shoot out from under the locomotive wheel like a bullet,
killing or hurting whoever it hits. Once under the wheel
it could also cause a train to come off the tracks (derailment)
which could cause a serious
problem to the surrounding community, possibly involving
hazardous materials. A train derailment always has the potential
to seriously hurt the railroad crew and people standing near
the tracks.
- NEVER throw
your toys at a train. The toy could bounce off the train
and come back
and hit you or it could go
through the locomotive
cab window and injure the railroad engineer or other crew member.
- NEVER get
in or walk around a railroad car parked on the tracks. It can
move suddenly without
any warning. If you
are climbing into
or walking behind the rail car when another set of cars
is shoved into it you are likely to be seriously hurt,
possibly
loosing
an arm or leg........or your life.
- NEVER climb
on or between standing railroad cars or take a short cut by
crawling under
them. It can be very hard
to hear a far-away
engine that might move the train. If you were on the
car, you might fall off, possibly under the wheels.
You might
find yourself unable
to get off the moving train and worse yet, you might
fall off the moving train.
- NEVER get on, walk across
or fish from a railroad bridge. There are no sidewalks for
you to move to if a train
comes. The train
does not generally blow the whistle at the bridge.
- NEVER walk into a railroad
tunnel. Tunnels are only wide enough for the train itself and
a train can
come at anytime.
- NEVER stand next to a
moving train. You never know what might shoot out from under
the wheels of the
train. Trains
are
inspected regularly,
but straps and chains holding down freight can
come loose at any time. If these items hit you,
they could
seriously
hurt or even
kill you..
- NEVER play "chicken" with the train. This game can quickly
end in death.
